Even More Facts About ‘Grease’

Grease is one of those movies that my parents watched with me and that I will no doubt watch with my future children. It’s a classic that holds up, even almost 40 years later. Not many movies these days can do that.

We wanted to know as much as we could about this great film and blessed you all with 17 facts about the movie. If that wasn’t enough, here a few more to fill that Grease-shaped hole in your heart.

1. Who remembers when Henry Winkler played Fonzie in Happy Days?

He was actually up for the role of Danny Zuko but ended up turning it down.

Honestly, I could totally see this happening, but John Travolta ended up doing such a great job and really made the role his.

2. Throughout the movie, the cast ended up chewing roughly a total of 100,000 pieces of bubble gum.

That’s up to a whopping 5,000 pieces a day! I can only imagine how sore their jaws were.

3. Notice how many extras there were in the movie?

A lot of them actually won a nationwide contest to appear in the film!

If I were them, I would still bring up that fun little fact to whoever would listen, even after all these years.

4. Elvis Presley was offered the role of the Guardian Angel for the “Beauty School Drop-Out” number, but he turned it down.

He actually ended up dying while the movie was filming a different scene, and that’s why you hear his name mentioned in the song “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee.”

And now I’m sad.

5. In Spain and Latin America, the movie was released under the title Brillantina.

Why? Because the title Grease translates to say “fat” in Spanish.

If that’s not the funniest thing you’ve heard all day, I don’t know what is.

6. Because of Olivia Newton-John’s Australian accent, the entire role of Sandy had to be adjusted.

Sandy’s last name in the original play was actually Dumbrowski, which was later changed to Olsson. Ultimately, the director really wanted her in the movie, and they did what they had to in order to make it work!

7. Jeff Conaway played the role of Kenickie.

He actually credits Grease for the reason he became addicted to painkillers. Apparently, someone dropped him during a dance number, and he ended up hurting his back because of it.

8. Jeff was actually forced to walk with a slouch in the movie so he would appear to be much shorter than John Travolta.

In real life, John is only half an inch taller than Jeff!

9. Jeff was actually going to be the one who sings “Greased Lightning,” not John like we see in the movie.

John ended up convincing the director to let him do it instead. At first, Jeff was hesitant, but he eventually gave up the song.

10. Remember the scene with the dance contest at the school?

It had to be filmed in a gymnasium with no air conditioning and closed doors. As a result, a lot of the extras had to be removed because of the extreme heat.

Also, am I the only one who laughs at the thought of my high school hosting a dance contest this intense?
